The Timken Museum of Art and Fashion Careers
College will host the second annual "Art of Fashion" at 6
p.m. Saturday, August 29. Guests will see modern
interpretations of costumes worn in 12 European masterpieces
from the permanent collection of paintings at the Timken
Museum of Art. Models will stand 'in tableaux' showing
the costumes in front of the works of art. Informal
modeling will also take place throughout the evening.
Guests will enjoy one complimentary signature cocktail, a no
host bar and light hors d'oeuvres with ticket
purchase. Event Chair is Patricia O'Connor, CEO and
founder of Fashion Careers College. Honorary Chair is
London Fashion Design Icon Zandra Rhodes. Cost is
$75. A limited number of student tickets are available
for $25. Proceeds will benefit Timken Museum of Art

Art in the Evening: Upcoming Lectures
5:30 p.m. February 18th
On February 18th, Dr. Thomas Gaehtgens, director of the
Getty Research Institute, Los Angeles, and expert on the
history of art museums, will lecture on Challenging the Encyclopedic Museum: Berlin's
Museum Island
5:30 p.m. April 30th
On April 30, Dr. Anne Woollett, associate curator,
Department of Paintings, J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles,
will lecture on Rembrandt in
Southern California.
5:30 p.m. June 3rd
Featured lecturer Dr. Andrew Jenks is
Assistant Professor of History at California State
University Long Beach, specializing in the Soviet
Union, technology and the environment. Jenks received
his Ph.D. from Stanford University and is the author of
the Palekh exhibition catalogue and Russia in a Box: Art and Identity in an Age
of Revolution (Northern Illinois
University Press, 2005). Jenks' talk "Traditional or Modern? The Artistic
Traditions of Palekh in Historical
Perspective" will examine
the paradoxically "modern" nature of the Palekh lacquer
tradition.
5:30 p.m. September 17th
Dr. Wendy Salmond is Professor of Art History
at Chapman University, Orange, California. She
has written and lectured extensively on Russian
art and design. Her current project is a book
tracing transformations in the perception and function
of icons in Russia, from objects of devotion to works
of art. Salmond will present "The Language of Palekh: From Devotion to
Decoration." This lecture
explores how the style of modern Palekh painting was
invented, what it borrowed from icons, and how it
adapted and repurposed the technique of icon painting
to suit new Soviet realities.

2009 Family Storytelling
Join us at the Timken Museum of Art where
professional storyteller Harlynne Geisler will share a
lively tale inspired my Museum masterpieces. Family
Storytelling is a fun educational program that encourages
visitors of all ages to broaden their perspective about art.
Ages 5 and up are welcome. Admission is FREE!

following Saturdays:

Guided Gallery Tours
Docent-guided tours in English and
Spanish are designed to introduce adult visitors, children
in grades K-12 and college students to the Timken's Putnam
Foundation Collection. Tours are offered:
- Tuesday-Friday 10 a.m. to noon
- Every 2nd and 3rd Saturday from 11
a.m. to 1 p.m

These tours are open to the public, offered free of charge,
and may be 1/2-hour to 1-hour long. An instructor must
accompany college classes and K-12 classes must include one
chaperone per 10 children.

Slide Presentations
The Timken offers presentations with
slides to groups such as retirement homes, community centers
and schools as an introduction to its collection. To

Docent Program Guest Lecture Series
2009
The Timken's Guest Lecture Series
features insightful talks by distinguished scholars and art
historians from around the United States. The series is part
of the Museum's Docent Program and is open to Timken docents and Connoisseur level
members and above.
Lectures take place on Wednesday mornings
at 10:00 a.m. at the Museum. Please arrive early, as seating
is limited.

Docent Program
If you love art, have two hours a month
to spare and are looking for new pursuits, consider becoming
a docent at the Timken! As a docent, you'll give gallery
tours, answer visitor questions and help with special events
and projects.
Ages 18 and up are welcome. Fluency in
more than one language, especially Spanish, is helpful but
not required. No previous art experience is necessary, as
ongoing training will be provided. Shifts can accommodate a
variety of schedules.
